Just a reminder that the application period for the Robert J. Watson Bursary program will be closing on Wednesday, November 22 2017. Please be sure to get your applications in before this date at www.rjwbursary.com.

At this time, the province of Nova Scotia has not received enough applications to match the number of bursaries awarded – there is free money up for grabs!

Job Opportunity: Receptionist (Cape Breton)

The Atlantic Canada Regional Council of Carpenters, Millwrights and Allied Workers (ACRC) has one (1) opening for a Receptionist position in its Sydney, NS office. The successful candidate is an experienced receptionist in a fast-paced environment.

The ACRC represents unionized carpenters, millwrights, and allied workers throughout Atlantic Canada and is a part of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBC) with more than 500,000 members across North America.

WORK LOCATION
24 Cossitt Heights Drive, Sydney, NS B1P 7E8

HOURS
Monday to Friday, (8 hours per day, 40 hours per week)

QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate must possess a strong work ethic, excellent organizational and time-management skills, and have a commitment to excellence in their field.  The successful candidate must possess the following qualifications:

  • Advanced expertise in a Windows environment, including the full suite of Microsoft office programs: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Completion of a diploma or degree in administrative support and / or business is strongly preferred
  • Three to five years of related work experience is an asset
  • Effective problem solving abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Deadline and detail-oriented with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Well organized and can manage tasks simultaneously; can effectively document and process information in an organized system

SALARY
Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Olde Tyme Union Picnic – Sydney, NS

Our second Olde Tyme Union Picnic of the year is THIS SATURDAY, August 12! We are excited to partner with the Cape Breton Unionized Trades Dragon Boat Festival and will have a ton of activities for everyone, including a BBQ, bouncy castles, skills demonstrations, rock climbing wall, giveaways, and much more! Do you want to attend the 2017 National Apprenticeship Competition and ACRC Picnic in Charlottetown?

If so, the Atlantic Canada Regional Council is holding a contest where you and a guest can win travel, accommodation, and a meal stipend to attend the 2017 NAC and participate in the ACRC Olde Tyme Union Picnic on August 26, 2017.

Here’s how it works: For every union meeting you attend (all regions) and program you participate in (Journeyman Leadership, Site Organizer, assisting union campaigns, etc.) you will earn one ballot in the draw. The more you participate, the more ballots you earn!

In addition, any member who filled out the recent ACRC Membership Survey will automatically get one ballot in the contest.

To help make the day a success, we ask for a minimum volunteer commitment of four hours from each winner to assist with set up / tear down, event support, and other duties as assigned.

Up to forty (40) draws will take place across Atlantic Canada, proportional to membership numbers in each region.

Deadline for all ballots to be received is Thursday, June 15, 2017.

Labour Day

General ACRC ad for Labour DayOn September 5, the Atlantic Canada Regional Council of Carpenters, Millwrights & Allied Workers wishes to recognize the achievements of our members and workers everywhere to improve the communities in which they live. Labour Day is a time to honour the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well being of our country.

Please note ACRC offices will be closed on Labour Day Monday, reopening on Tuesday, September 6.
